This series was taken at Bombay Beach, a desert town on the edge of the Salton Sea.

The Salton Sea is not actually a sea and Bombay Beach is not really beach. It was accidentally created in 1905 when irrigation diverting the Colorado River overspilled into the Salton Basin forming a man made lake. The Salton Sea enjoyed several years as a booming tourist destination in the 50’ s and 60’s until agricultural runoff poisoned the lake. This runoff led to increased salinity, nutrient pollution and an accumulation of toxins, creating hazardous conditions for wildlife and humans.

Today, Bombay Beach is a wasteland that has drawn the attention of renegade artists. An art spectacle in a deserted town ravaged by toxicity. A humbling reminder how our attempts to manipulate nature can lead to unforeseen tragedy. Yet, even the darkest of situations make room for curiosity and creativity.
